Projects: TrenStar and the Environment

TrenStar has invested substantially in the 2009 inaugural Green Supply Chain Awards as a way of recognising both the supply chain’s impact on the environment and those companies and individuals that make a difference.

The event was created by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (Ciltsa), Supply Chain Today and the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) in an effort to support and recognise companies and individuals for their environmentally friendly solutions in the supply chain.

The inaugural event, which was held in Randburg on 27 August, recognised achievers in several categories. The three winners were: City of Cape Town’s Utility Services’ Project Management Division – best project, PM Systems – best product and Etienne van der Lith, Environmental Project Manager for the Bombela Consortium, as the Green Leader of the Year.

TrenStar used this platform to emphasise their commitment to Mother Nature and to minimising their impact on the environment. In much the same way TrenStar has added its efforts to that of winning companies in supporting the environment. Some of the initiatives that TrenStar has introduced include:

• Fully recyclable containers – all containers in TrenStar’s pool of reusable containers can be fully recycled.
• Bio-degradable cleaning liquids – Apart from the necessary steps taken to make its cleaning facilities more efficient, TrenStar has also introduced completely bio-degradable cleaning liquids.
• Enhanced tracking and tracing technologies – Through its state of the art Container Management System (TrenStarCM), TrenStar has the ability to track each individual container from its creation to its final scrapping, taking special care to reuse and recycle these containers.

TrenStar has also, through its partnership with Roan Safety, introduced a wide range of Euro-spec cleaning and containment products. These include biodegradable and environmentally friendly spillage containment kits and spill decks for the transport and storage of hazardous products. Roan Safety is a subsidiary of the TrenStar group.

TrenStar is a patron member of the Responsible Packaging Management Association of Southern Africa (RPMASA).
